Greetings, Coral-Listers,
We would like to call your attention to Theme 2 (Coral Reefs and
Global Change) of the Okinawa 10th ICRS; in particular, mini-symposium
(2-12), "Understanding the Interactive Roles of Light, Sea Temperature
and Carbon-Dioxide in Coral Bleaching, Growth and Coral Recruit
Health."
With this mini-symposium we hope to draw together researchers who are
interested in the additive and synergistic effects of physical
parameters on coral bleaching, growth and larval recruitment.
Research has shown that sea temperature and light play an important
role in coral bleaching. Other work has shown that chromophoric
dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the water column probably plays an
important role in modulating the absorption of ultraviolet light, and
is perhaps a critical factor in whether selected species bleach or
not. Additional lines of enquiry are seeking to discover how
carbon-dioxide, sea temperature, and light interact to influence coral
growth and coral larval recruitment success. Finally, the response of
zooxanthellae to changes in sea temperature and light are being
investigated through continously operating in situ PAM-fluorometry
sensors to better determine the mechanism of bleaching. A forum for
discussing how all these (and other) environmental factors (to include
e.g., suspended sediments or nutrients) can be measured, modeled and
reported together in near real-time will help us to better understand
the response of corals to environmental stress. Our hope is to use
these discussions to better design future NOAA Coral Reef Early
Warning System (CREWS) stations and buoys.
We hope you will consider presenting your research at this
mini-symposium. Deadline for abstract submission is December 26,
2003.
Please visit [1]http://www.plando.co.jp/icrs2004/ for instructions on
abstract submission, deadlines, registration and other information.
Copies of abstracts should be submitted on the conference website
([2]http://www.plando.co.jp/icrs2004/) and copied in an e-mail to me
and/or Dr. Rusty Brainard ([3]Rusty.Brainard at noaa.gov).
Thank you so much for your time and gracious consideration.
Sincerely yours,
Jim Hendee
