Dear Coral List Members,
the Australian Institute of marine ScienceS is appointing two Postdoctoral
scientists with qualifications as specified below.
Best wishes,
Katharina Fabricius
POST-DOCTORAL SCIENTIST (Position No. 239)
Biofilms and Biomarkers for Reef Water Quality
Water Quality on the Great Barrier Reef
Coastal Processes
AIMS is a core participant in the 'Catchment to Reef 'collaborative partnership
between the Rainforest and Reef Cooperative Research Centres to develop tools
for identifying and monitoring the impacts of land-based runoff and
contaminants on water quality and the health of wet tropical rivers and marine
habitats of the Great Barrier Reef region.
AIMS is currently seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Scientist in the area of
microbial ecology, biofilms or stress biomarkers related to water quality. The
successful candidate will join a research team at AIMS within the Water Quality
on the Great Barrier Reef Team, and will take a leading role in research toward
developing and applying new, more sensitive and cost-effective monitoring tools
for detecting changes in nearshore marine water quality and ecosystem status
related to water quality. He/she will focus upon the identification and use of
microbial biomarkers or changes in biofilms as a measure of changed water
quality status (pesticides, increased nutrient availability and
sedimentation).
The successful candidate will have appropriate experience in microbiology,
ecolocy, marine biology, physiology or a related discipline. Experience in
molecular techniques for measuring patterns of multiple gene or enzyme
expression, and experience in tropical marine systems will be highly
regarded. S/he will be skilled in the design, conduct and interpretation of
field and laboratory experiments, will have an excellent publication record,
communication skills, and team spirit. The ability to meet AIMS' requirements
for scientific diving is essential. The position will entail extended periods
at sea to participate in experimental work and SCUBA surveys of coastal reef
communities.
The position will be a full-time (nine days per fortnight) fixed term
appointments until 30th June 2006 (commencing as soon as possible), at a salary
