RESEARCH ASSOCIATE II
The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS)
of the University of Miami invites applications for a Research
Associate II position in Biological Oceanography.
Applicants must have a BS degree in Biological Oceanography,
Mathematics, Physics, Computer Programming, Environmental Science or a
related field, plus two to five years of relevant work experience.
Necessary skills include use of oceanographic modeling tools
(especially expert systems, neural networks, Bayesian Belief
Networks), computer programming to support these and other marine
environmental modeling and analysis tools, and experience at working
in a variety of operating systems. The incumbent will be responsible
for modeling the coral reef ecosystem utilizing artificial
intelligence tools, supporting computer architecture and programming
to support marine research scientists engaged in a variety of
disciplines (ocean chemistry, biology, oceanography), as well as
direct support for marine environmental research data for the Coral
Health and Monitoring Program at the Atlantic Oceanographic and
Meteorological Laboratory.
A statement of interest, curriculum vitae and three letters of
recommendation are to be sent to:
Dr. Joseph M. Prospero, Director
Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies
4600 Rickenbacker Causeway

Applications will be accepted through August 15, 2004.
The University of Miami is an equal opportunity workplace.
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE II
INTRODUCTION
This position is situated in the Cooperative Institute for Marine and
Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel
School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (RSMAS). The research is
concerned with developing a marine environmental modeling research
program utilizing a variety of computer-related tools, as well as
collection, synthesis and analysis of marine environmental data
derived from a variety of instruments in the field and laboratory,
including possibly at meteorological and oceanographic monitoring
stations in the Florida Keys and US coral reef areas in the Atlantic
and Pacific. The research will involve close collaboration with
scientists at RSMAS and the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and
Meteorological Laboratory (AOML).
RESEARCH SITUATION
The incumbent will assist artificial intelligence experts at AOML in
developing ecosystem stimulus-response models, and will also
occasionally assist principal investigators in trouble-shooting
systems designed for the acquisition, storage and retrieval of marine
environmental data, developing and interpreting data analysis and
visualization products. The incumbent will also participate in the
development of near real-time modeling and operations software
components for a variety of research programs, including especially
the Coral Reef Early Warning System and SEAKEYS Networks. The
applicant must assist in the procurement of the software and hardware
that provide the computing research infrastructure necessary for the
tasks to be performed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The incumbent will be expected to function with supervision. General
instructions regarding scope and objectives will be given. The
incumbent must be able to work independently, but will be under the
supervision of the Director of CIMAS and will be expected to work with
the technical guidance of senior scientists at AOML. The incumbent is
expected to report periodically to the Director of CIMAS on the
progress of work.
GUIDELINES AND ORIGINALITY
The incumbent is expected to demonstrate ingenuity, originality and
some autonomy in employing effective artificial intelligence tools in
the characterizing of marine ecosystem response under a variety of
stress matrices, as measured by near real-time instrumented and static
arrays at coral reef and other ocean areas. Guidance will be obtained
from interactions with scientists at AOML and RSMAS.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required education is a BS degree plus two to five year of
work-related experience in artificial intelligence, biological
oceanography, mathematics, physics, computer programming,
environmental science or other related fields. Necessary skills
include utilization of use of oceanographic modeling tools (especially
expert systems, neural networks, Bayesian Belief Networks), computer
programming to support these and other marine environmental modeling
and analysis tools, and experience at working in a variety of
operating systems.
