Call for Applications
Coral Reef and Marine Science Foundation 2005 Doctoral Fellowship
The Coral Reef and Marine Science Foundation provides financial support
for field-intensive coral reef research by outstanding PhD students
enrolled at US universities. This is the inaugural year of the
Fellowship, which is expected to be awarded annually from 2005 onwards.
Applications are invited for the 2005 Fellowship from students who are
enrolled in a PhD program at a US university. Preference will be given
to students in the second or third year of their graduate program. The
proposal must involve significant field work on coral reefs and funding
will run for up to two years. The Fellowship provides support for travel
and field expenses but does not provide stipend support. The Fellowship
is not intended to support research or travel by the Fellow's PhD advisor.
The value of the 2005 Fellowship is $6,000 per year ($12,000 maximum).
The closing date for applications is 1 NOVEMBER 2004. It is expected
that decisions will be made by early 2005 and funds will be released to
successful applicants shortly thereafter.
Selection Criteria:
1. Significance, quality and innovation of the proposed research.
2. The applicant's academic and research record.
3. Feasibility of the proposed research within the limitations of budget
and safety regulations.
4. Efficient usage of Fellowship funds.
5. Evidence that sufficient funding will be available to complete the
project as planned, or presentation of a contingency plan for amending
the project if additional funding does not become available.
Conditions of award:
1. A progress report must be submitted each year, including details of
expenditure and revised budget estimates for the coming year(s).
Subsequent funding depends upon suitable progress.
2. Any funds unspent at the end of each Fellowship year must be returned
to the Foundation unless Fellowship administrators approve carry-over
arrangements.
3. Successful applicants must provide evidence of enrollment in a PhD
program to undertake research on a topic related to coral reefs
4. Successful applicants must provide evidence that they have adequate
support to complete their field research during the tenure of the
fellowship.
Submission of applications:
The Fellowship is administered by the Wildlife Conservation Society in
New York (www.wcs.org) with funding from the Coral Reef and Marine
Science Foundation. Application forms can be downloaded from
www.wcs.org/marine/crmsf and should be submitted by email to
crmsf at wcs.org as an attachment in Word (.doc or .rtf format) using the
font settings used in the original application form.
The applicant's curriculum vitae must be sent as a separate attachment,
and a confidential letter of recommendation from the student's
advisor(s) must be sent in a separate email directly from the advisor to
crmsf at wcs.org. This letter should indicate the suitability of the
applicant, the acceptability of the proposed research and how closely
involved the supervisor will be with the project. The advisor's email
must also meet the application deadline.
Late applications and those in which word and page allowances are
exceeded will not be considered. Receipt of applications will be
acknowledged by email within seven working days.
