Dear coral list,
below you will find the 1st registration and some additional information
regarding a tsunami field symposium held on Bonaire.
The Caribbean island of Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles) exhibit excellent
preserved and impressive paleo-tsunami deposits. Prof. Dieter Kelletat
and Dr. Anja Scheffers, two physical geographers and tsunami researchers
of the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany) organize the "First
International Tsunami Field Symposium, Bonaire, 2006", from 2nd to 4th
of March in the year 2006 on Bonaire. The meeting will consist of 2 half
days of oral presentations and 2 half and one full day of field trips.
A field guide (book of about 120 pages with many documents) will be
prepared for the meeting, and a proceedings volume will be published as
soon as possible in the international journal "Zeitschrift für
Geomorphologie" as a special issue, peer-reviewed. We organize this
symposium as a contribution to the efforts of IGCP 495 (International
Geoscience Programme 495: Quaternary Land-Ocean Interactions: Driving
Mechanisms and Coastal Responses), for the Commission on Coastal Systems
of the International Geographical Union and other scientific bodies
including the Sea Grant Program of Puerto Rico (Prof. Aurelio Mercado).
Preliminary topic list:
What are priorities for studying tsunami deposits?
-Big picture: What are the major unanswered questions we
should work on?
-Public connections: How can we help the public through
tsunami deposit research?
How can we generalize about tsunami deposits?
-Criteria for recognition: What is the difference between
tsunami and storm deposits?
-Reliability of preservation: What portion of all tsunamis
leave identifiable deposits?
What are the geomorphic effects of a tsunami?
- Special focus will adress the interaction of tsunami with
coral reefs
How can tsunami deposits contribute to hazard assessment and
preparedness?
-Recurrence: Do surveys of deposits accurately represent
past and future recurrence?
-Case studies: How have tsunami deposits been successfully
used in the past?
-As educational tools: Can deposits convince coastal
residents of tsunami hazard?
How can we translate tsunami research into tools for education and
outreach?
