Dear coral-listers,
Please find to follow details regarding an education component to the
Shallow Marine Environments of the Southern Seychelles research
project.
Live Marine Science Education Project:
The research project is a collaboration between the Khaled bin Sultan
Living Oceans Foundation, the University of Cambridge (Cambridge
Coastal Research Unit-CCRU) and the Seychelles Centre for Marine
Research and Technology. The Trident Trust has partnered with this
group, and is supporting an educational component to the Shallow
Marine Environments of the Southern Seychelles project. The
educational component aims to motivate, and enthuse, young people
about the exciting and rewarding career paths available through the
pursuit of a science orientated education.
During the Seychelles expedition (January 10th to Jan 28^th 2005), and
utilising the platform of the Golden Shadow (a 67m motor vessel,
equipped with modern scientific and communications equipment), daily
scientific diary entries will be transmitted to the Living Oceans
Foundation web-site. Aimed at mapping shallow marine habitats (using
a sea-plane mounted CASI sensor, coupled with SCUBA diver
observations), identifying coral recovery following the serious
bleaching event in 1997/1998, and, providing marine
ecosystem/biodiversity and conservation management advice to the
Seychelles Government, the field-phase of this project has been
offered as a unique mechanism to communicate the field activities of a
high profile and contemporary science project direct to the
classroom.
To maximise the benefits for schools and students, in following the
progress of the expedition, the daily scientific diary entries will be
recorded and mapped as closely as possible, to particular aspects of
the core science curriculum at Key Stage 4 (UK curriculum). This
record will be available to schools via the Living Oceans Foundation
web-site.
In addition to these daily scientific diary entries, the web-site will
also host pages that outline:
- The Science: research plans, aims and objectives, methodologies.
- The Itinerary: research planning, maps and imagery.
- Key scientific personnel: highlighting their progression routes from
school to scientist.
- Virtual vessel: to show the working and living areas, and equipment,
of the vessel.
- Vessel Logs: Location, ship track logs, use of positioning
equipment, weather systems, sea state etc.
- Scientific fact/observation of the day: contemporary observations
from the scientists/crew.
- Q&A sessions: 15 schools have been invited to pose questions to the
project via direct e-mail access to the vessel. Interviews with the
scientists/crew will therefore be possible, in near-real-time. Q&As
will be posted on the web site.
- Teacher resources: links to other relevant web sites.
The Science in the Seychelles web-site is available by visiting:

Link.
Please pass on to anyone who you think may be interested in following
our progress thank you.
Daily updates to the web-site will be available during the field phase
of this project: Jan 10^th - Jan 28^th 2005.
(Note: sea-state may influence the scientific itinerary, and hence the
frequency of the updates).

CCRU Research Assistant).
