Reports continue to come in on the bleaching that is currently
ongoing in the Caribbean. The center of heat stress is continuing to
expand southward, placing more corals at risk.
Please continue reporting bleaching events (or non-events) at http://
www.reefbase.org/input/bleachingreport/index.asp
As groups continue to perform surveys on bleaching, it is important
that we document areas that do not bleach. These areas may be
important in reef recovery throughout the region and programs have
been developed by The Nature Conservancy and others to consider these
areas where corals may be more resilient due to local factors,
hydrodynamics, genetics, zooxanthellae clades, and other factors. As
bleaching events recur, documentation of potential resilience will
become more and more important.
Cheers,
Mark
