PhD opportunity at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS)
Water Quality and Ecosystem Health Team
Biofilms as indicators for Water Quality on the Great Barrier Reef
The bioindicator research of the AIMS Water Quality and Environmental
Health team focuses on a variety of coral reef organism groups including
corals and biofilm communities to establish if these can be used as
indicators for changes in marine water quality (e.g., nutrients,
suspended sediments and light regime), especially in the Great Barrier
Reef. Our studies cover a wide variety of research approaches, such as
field ecology, physiology, molecular and microbiological techniques. Our
previous research has provided exciting leads suggesting the microbial
community of GBR sediments can serve as indicators for a variety of
water quality parameters.
As part of a study funded by the Australian Governments Marine Tropical
Research Facility (MTSRF) we have funding available for a PhD student to
work on biofilms as indicators for water quality of the Great Barrier
Reef. We are seeking a highly motivated student with interest in
molecular, microbiological and/or ecological research methods. The
prospective student will be encouraged to conduct manipulative studies
in the field and aquaria on one of the following topics:
1) Bacterial communities on sediments and artificial substrates
2) Benthic Diatom communities
3) Benthic Foraminifera communities
Because AIMS is not a teaching institution, students need to be enrolled
at an Australian or overseas university and AIMS anticipates for the
university supervisor to have an active role in developing and guiding
the student project.
Interested students please send expressions of interest and CV to:
