Seems like they are asking for over $700,000 form sponsors money + an
unbelievable exhibit space cost of $3,000 per booth....(no discounts
for non-profits either...at least not listed).
See
http://www.icrs2012.com/Downloads/ICRS%202012%20Prospectus.pdf
If the items listed actually cost as much as they are asking for
somebody over they is making a killing...and if they are all sponsored
why such a high participate cost? The more you peel back the Onion on
this conference the more my eyes cry....

The coral community is one of the most hardworking and dedicated scientific communities worldwide and the least we deserve is an explanation to this high costs decision. We are probably talking hundreds of scientists, NGO members, undergraduate and graduate students, post docs, etc worldwide who will not be able to participate in such important meeting due to these high rates. As Ernesto said some days ago, not everyone has $4-6,000 to spend on a week-long symposium, certaintly I don't...

To my surprise the cost of 12 meetings I find is similar to that of the 11ICRS. As you can see in the linked file (http://docs.google.com/demo/edit?id=scAAZeJGvRp5N46zklUKTmV-A&hl=en&dt=spreadsheet#spreadsheet), only the EMBO meeting in Vienna comes close to the 12ICRS. I did not include what the meetings offered with the fee (i.e. meals, receptions) but still the fees are not THAT high. Some may argue these meeting are mostly in the US, however past/future meetings of these societies have also taken place in international locations.
