The Fish Ecology Lab at the College of Marine Science, University of
South Florida, seeks to hire a Research Technician.The successful
applicant will participate in several field-based projects including
research on goliath grouper, lionfish, and commercially-harvested reef
fishes.The successful applicant will hold a master’s or bachelor’s
degree in biology, ecology, fisheries or a related field.Salary is
dependent upon experience and level of degree ($12 - $15/hr).The start
date is flexible but preference will be given to those that can begin by
October 15, 2012.
*Required skills:*The successful applicant must be a certified SCUBA
diver and preference will go to those with AAUS certification.Must be
able to work on boats ranging in size from small personal crafts (up to
30’), medium charter boats (30-50’), and large, commercial fishing
vessels (>50’).The applicant must be able to work in adverse conditions
(e.g., rough seas), be able to lift at least 50lbs, work both
independently and in group scenarios (including with other scientists
and commercial fishermen), and must have excellent organizational skills.
*Preferred skills:*Preference will go to applicants that have experience
towing and driving boats up to 26’ in length, basic lab experience
(necropsy, otolith extraction), and basic computer experience (MS Office
including Access and Excel, R statistical language, GIS).
