Congratulations to Jean Wiener, Director of the Fondation pour la
Protection de la Biodiversité Marine (FoProBiM) [or "Foundation for the
Protection of Marine Biodiversity" in English] for being one of six
recipients of the prestigious 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize!
Recognising the inextricable link between biodiversity conservation and
the livelihoods of local communities, Jean’s efforts empowered community
members in southwest and northeast Haiti to see the long-term value in
sustainably managing fisheries and mangrove forests. Jean's tireless
efforts eventually led to the creation of Haiti's first two Marine
Protected Areas (MPAs) in 2013. Through FoProBiM he is now working to
involve local communities in the successful implementation and
management of the two MPAs to ensure they don’t end up as “paper parks.”
He also hopes to develop a broader system of MPAs throughout the rest of
the country by assisting other communities with MPA proposals.
Check out this short video about Jean’s efforts that make him a worthy
winner of the 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize for outstanding
environmental achievement in islands and island nations.
