The Fogarty Coral Reef Laboratory at the Center for Marine Science, University of North Carolina in Wilmington, NC is looking to hire an assistant coral husbandry research technician to support our expanded land-based coral sexual reproduction nursery and research aquarium facility. The position would start as soon as possible and run through June 30, 2024 with the possibility of extension depending upon performance and funding availability.
The minimum qualifications are an associate's degree and 1 year of directly related experience working with corals or other animals in closed loop aquaculture (or related experience). Preferred qualifications a bachelor’s degree in biology or marine biology from an accredited college or university with 1 year working with corals and closed loop aquaculture systems or related experience. Preferred skillsets include familiarity with Neptune Apex Controller System, experience with managing students/volunteers, and experience with aquaculture system design and maintenance. The ideal candidate would have experience working with Caribbean corals in a research setting.
Additional skills needed include a strong work ethic and excellent communication and organizational skills and a working knowledge of computer software (Windows, Microsoft Office).Primary duties:• Oversee daily care and maintenance of adult and juvenile corals• Assist with the sexual propagation of corals including setup of larval rearing cones and appropriate space for settlement and growout• General coral husbandry tasks include maintaining high water quality, siphoning and cleaning tanks, employing algal mitigation strategies, maintaining grazing organisms, administering treatments, providing appropriate lighting schemes, feeding corals, cleaning coral recruit substrates, quantifying settlement and recruit survival, maintaining a safe, clean, organized indoor wetlab• Assist with deliverables associated with specific funding efforts• Maintain inventory, equipment, and related research materials• Management of lab social media accounts and associated postings• Assist in outreach and education events• Normal hours are 8:00-5:00 M-F; however, weekend and evening hours will be required at times, especially during spawning season and experiments
